Degree from antiquity

Noun

(Pali Dirgha, L. de- “down” + gradus “step”, L.L. degredare, V.L. *degradus “a step,” Old French degre – early 13c., “a degree, step, rank,” (French: degré) English degree.

A degree (in full, a degree of arc, arc degree, or arcdegree), usually denoted by ° (the degree symbol), is a measurement of plane angle, representing 1⁄360 of a full rotation; one degree is equivalent to π/180 radians. When that angle is with respect to a reference meridian, it indicates a location along a great circle of a sphere, such as Earth.
